3 foreigners who fought for Ukraine sentenced to death
Two British citizens and a Morocco were sentenced to death on Thursday because of fighting on the Ukraine side, in the sentence handed down by the country’s pro-Moscow rebels.
The process of three fighters arrested was criticized by Ukraine and the West as fake and violation of war rules.
Meanwhile, when the Kremlin forces continued the friction war in the East, Russian President Vladimir Putin seemed to equal his actions with the affairs of Peter The Great in the 18th century and said the country needed to “take back” of Russian historic land.
A court in the People’s Republic of the Donetsk who proclaimed himself in Ukraine found three fighters guilty for seeking a loss of strong power, a violation that could be punished by death in the East Republic that was not recognized. The people were also punished for the activities of mercenary and terrorism.
The Russian State News Agency, Ria Novosti, reported that the defendants – identified as Aiden Aslin, Shaun Pinner and Brahim Saadoun – would face the shooting forces. They have one month to appeal.
The separatist side argues that the three of them are “mercenary” who are not entitled to ordinary protection given by war prisoners. They were the first foreign fighters who were sentenced by rebels supported by Russia Ukraine.
Spokesman for the Ukraine Foreign Ministry, by Nikolenko condemned the trial in an invalid legally, saying, “The court shows the interests of propaganda above the law and morality.” He said that all foreign citizens who fought as part of the Ukraine Armed Forces must be considered as Ukraine military personnel and protected.
British Foreign Minister Luz Truss said the punishment of “false assessment without legitimacy.” Prime Minister Boris spokesman Johnson Johie Jamie Davies said that under the Geneva Convention, Pow was entitled to immunity as a warrior.
Saadoun’s father, Taher Saadoun, told the Moroccan Moroccan online Arabic newspaper Madar 21 that his son was not a mercenary and that he held the citizenship of Ukraine.
Aslin and Pinner’s families said that the two men were members of the Ukraine military who had long been serving. Both are said to have lived in Ukraine since 2018.
The three men fought with Ukraine forces before Pinner and Aslin surrendered to Pro-Russian troops at the South Port of Marieupol in mid-April and Saadoun was arrested in mid-March in the eastern city of Volnovakha.
The Russian military argues that foreign mercenates who struggle on the Ukraine side are not warriors and must expect a long prison sentence, at most, if arrested.
In other developments, Putin drew parallel between Peter The Great from St. Petersburg and modern Russian ambitions.
When Tsar founded the new capital, “There is no European country who recognizes him as Russia. Everyone recognizes him as Sweden, “Putin said. He added: “What (Peter) did? Take back and strengthen. That’s what he did. And it seems like it fell on us to take back and strengthen too. “
